1. The T-V-H submarine optical fibers system with total length of 3,373 Km and capacity of 560 Mb/s ( parallel to 7560 standard telephone channels each direction) was inaugurated and put into operation on 8/2/1996.
2. On 29/02/1996 the numbering plan of the whole Vietnam public telephone network was changed successfully & simultaneously. In Hanoi and Hochiminh City, the numbering plan is changed from 6 to 7 digits; in other cities and towns the numbering plan is changed from 5 to 6 digits.
3. On 11/03/1996, the Government released 12/CP decree on the function, responsibilities, competencies and organizational structure of the Department General of Posts and Telecommunications.
4. On 08/07/1996 the Danang International gateway exchanges AXE-105 was inaugurated and put into operation, completing the international gateway exchange network and the international telecoms network configuration of Vietnam.
The SS7 has been widely used among international gateway exchanges,among international gateway exchanges and domestic long distance tandem gateway exchanges, and to some international destinations.
By the end of 08/1996 the Danang tandem AXE-10 exchange was inaugurated and put in to operation, completing the allocation of tandem exchanges for the domestic long distance telecoms network.
5. Vietnam public telephone network reached the capacity of 1 million lines 0n 24/08/1996. Vietnam has become one of the 60 countries worldwide that have telephone networks exceeding the capacity of 1 million lines and Vietnam has been ranked 2nd in the region in telephone lines development pace.
6. A lot of new services have been introduced:
- From 26/06/1996 the mobile communications network VINAPHONE- The 2nd GSM network of VNPT has been put into operation, in parallel with VMS's VINAPHONE which had been operated before. By the end of 1996 network has got nearly 50 thousand subscriber, meanwhile VINAPHONE network has got about 6500 subscribers.
For the 1st time ever, Vsat service has been successfully introduced to interconnect national communications network with TruongSa, PhuQuy islands, with KeoNua bordergate. The interconnection with BachLongVi island completed.
In 23/09/1996, the 1st fixed wireless system of Vietnam- GMH-2000 was inaugurated in Hochiminh City.
- In 10/1996 the e-mail service of Vietnam - VNmail was officially introduced on the network.
- In the evening of 10/11/1996, the central special commnuniations network was successfully changed into a newly installed network. The first ISDN island of Vietnam has been put into operation.
7. On 23/09/1996 a ceremony was solemnly held to receive the 3rd grade independence Medal signed by President Hochiminh on 18/12/1954 for the whole southern radio- electronic sector.
8. The post-office network has been expanded. By the end of 1996 there have been 2,712 post office, which is 394 ones increased ( or 17% increased) in comparison to that number of 1995.
6,510 / 9088 villages receive daily newspapers within the date of distribution. This number has increased by 281 villages (or 4.52 % ) in comparison to 1995.
- 27/08/1996 is 50th anniversary of Vietnam revolutionary Postal Stamp.
- On 19/12/1996 the stamp collection in commemoration of 50th anniversary of the whole country resistance war day (19/12/1946-19/12/1996) was issued.
9. P&T industry has shown powerful development pace. Two additional J-V manufacturers of exchange equipment and optic fiber- TELEQ and FOCAL have been put into operation. The first export batch of product of VKX whose total value is approximately 2 million USD was delivered from the plant on 28/08/1996.
There have also been initial export products from SACOM enterprise, from Alcatel - Vietnam Telecoms Equipment J-V etc...,
10. The opticalization strategy of Vietnam Telecoms network has been started implementing.
- On 22/11/1996, the North- South information subhighway which is the SHD 2,5Gbit/s optic fibering, was officially inaugurated and put into operation. This ring has the biggest capacity and longest dimension among those of its kind in the region.
- Some interprovincial optical links such as Hanoi- HaiPhong - QuangNinh link, Hanoi-HoaBinh link, HCMC-VungTau link... and some 34 Mbit/s optical links have been constructed and put into use. Some local and intra-provincial optical links have also been constructed.
- On 27/03/1995 in dispatch No 1584/KTN, the Governmental Prime Minister has permitted P&T sector to join in the CSC terrestrial optical fiber link connecting 6 countries.
- On 31/10/1996 in dispatch No 5517/KTN, the Governmental Prime Minister has permitted P-T sector to join in global submarine optic fiber system SE-ME-WE 3 with capacity of 10Gbit/s, placing a firm platform for Vietnam International telecommunications to enter the 21st century.
11. Lost of P&T activities with good reputation, both domestically and internationally, have been highly appreciated by the social public debate such as the following.
- The 1st Competition for talented P&T women was successfully held from 04/09/1996 to 07/09/1996 in Danang Province with 128 candidates participating.
- The 6th National Radio-Electronic Conference was organized via video-conferencing linking Hanoi and Hochiminh City in 2 days : 17 and 18/10/1996 with 600 delegates participating. The Secretary General of Vietnam Communist Party Central Committee DO MUOI sent a congratulation letter to the conference,.
- The P&T Ministerial Conference of 3 Indochinese countries held in HCMC from 19 to 21/10/1996 with good results.
- The international exhibition on communications, Electronic, Computer, Office system and Broadcasting Equipment Vietnam Telecomp'96 - Vietnam Broadcasting '96 held in HCMC from 22 to 26/10/1996 with more than 150 companies from 22 countries participating has been highly appreciated by domestic and international public debate, achieving success in many aspects.
12. Total revenuer of P&T sector 1996 reachs nearly 7 thousand billion VND, which is 40,9 % increased in comparison to 1995. P&T sector has contributed more than 1 thousand billion VND to the state budget in 1996, exceeding the planned norm.
