Ha Giang P&T
Ha Giang, a mountain province which was re-established in 1993, has poor material facilities and difficult transport infrastructure, that has presented obstacles to the development of its posts and telecommunications services.
ln early 1993, following the directive to speed up development of the country's posts and telecommunications sector, Ha Giang P&T put into operation a digital switching system, constructed local microwave networks and connected with other inter-provincial systems. The transmission network linking the town with districts has been equipped with microwave equipment to expand total capacity to more than 8,000 lines. Hundreds of kilometers of cable lines were installed to replace bare wires, which has resulted in significantly improved communications quality.
All 34 border communes and border post offices have telephones. Ha Giang is the first border province to approach this amount of coverage. By December of last year, Ha Giang had 7,000 telephone subscribers or 1.1 telephones per 100 residents. Mobile phone, Internet and post savings services are now available in the province.
Postal services and press distribution have also improved. ln the past, mails, newspapers and magazines were delivered to districts twice a week. Delivery is now on a daily basis. Grass-roots post offices were built or improved to ensure that mails, newspapers and magazines reach addressees quickly. Ha Giang P&T has developed 36 village post office and cultural places, which help provide rural mountain dwellers with information about their province and the country as the whole.
Ha Giang P&T is implementing a project to connect to the national optic fiber cable network. Plans include completion of 31 village post office and cultural places and access to telephones for every commune by the end of 2002.
