Vietnam Telecom market including mobile sector has seen to have leaps and bounds development since the year 2000. During the past years, telecom market witnessed the appearance and growth of series new mobile networks as : Sfone, Viettel, EVN Telecom, HT Mobile ( now Vietnammobile) and Beeline.
It’ s necessary to open the door for telecom market and eliminate the monopoly for fair and healthy competition. However, a country like Vietnam which has 7 existing mobile operators including licensed virtual networks is waste and luxurious, a telecom expert comments.
If too many operators exploit the market at the same time, so they have to invest to infrastructure and equipments and this will lead to the overlapping and waste a lot of money. In order to recover the investment expenses, mobile operators have only one way is charging to the users.
Basing on this circumstance, a question has been raised. Why does the Government limit the number of mobile operators? It’s better to have only 3 or 4 operators. Though, the most important measure is that the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC), the State management agency in telecom sector should have the strictly control in quality, tariff and service for avoiding the giant operators to shake hands with each other for market manipulation. However, until this time, the point of view of MIC is still keeping the same situation and even does not limit the number of virtual networks.
Though not limit the number of operators to participate into the market, but MIC always set out the conditions, regulations and standards to evaluate the qualified enterprises, Vice Minister of MIC Le Nam Thang quoted as saying. The problem is that infrastructure investment should be re-considered and sharing telecom infrastructure once again to be seriously discussed. However, it’s not easy to find out the perfect solution for this matter in one or two days.
